SHE IS BLACK HISTORY DR. GLENELL M. LEE-PRUITT

Jarvis Christian University proudly welcomes our 13th president Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt, following her 11 years as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Her journey through public and private historically Black universities enriched her with profound insights into higher education.

 

A dedicated leader, she has consistently championed academics and fostered unity among faculty, staff, and students throughout her career. She is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Dr. Glenell Lee-Pruitt has obtained four academic degrees and has achieved various accomplishments as an academician, college dean, and now as a university president.

 

Black History Month is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of African Americans and their great accomplishments and attributions in U.S. history. Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt is Black history as the institution’s 2nd Black female president of an Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Her leadership as the President of Jarvis Christian University has encouraged and inspired leadership amongst students as well as her peers.

 

As an empowering leader, she consistently reminds the students at Jarvis that they are enough! No matter where the student come from, Pruitt believes in equal opportunity for all students. Her charismatic persona has touched the lives of many students and staff. She believes that students should not leave how they arrive, “We want something about them to have changed that will help them be their better selves." While she continues her journey as a leader, Jarvis Christian University will forever appreciate our 2nd Black female President, Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt.

 

Jarvis Christian University empowers students to achieve their career goals through an academic experience that prepares them for a life of significance. Whether a student is a recent high school graduate or a working adult seeking career advancement, Jarvis Christian University develops students of all ages intellectually, socially, spiritually, and emotionally.

Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Cynthia Hester has made a significant impact in the development of Jarvis Christian University. Dr. Hester was born in Lafayette, Louisiana to her parents and four siblings. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and keeps her sisters dearest to her heart. Hester cherishes her husband, Dr. Berry Hester, her beautiful children, and grandchildren. She began her love for accounting in the Oil and Gas industry as an accountant in Dallas, Texas. Before joining the staff at Jarvis Christian University, Dr. Hester worked at Grambling State University for 20 years as the director of career services and Vice President for Finance. She received her bachelor's degree from Grambling State University in Accounting and her Master's degree from Louisiana Tech University in Finance. Finally, she earned her doctorate from Grambling State in Higher Education Administration.

 

Dr. Hester is deeply invested in her students and values their proximity. When she found the campus of Jarvis Christian University, she immediately fell in love with the school’s environment. With it being her 2nd year at Jarvis, she is still learning from her own experiences as well as the students.

 

Hester believes that her most impactful contribution to the University is assisting with conflict resolution and bringing soft skills and student professional development. She places great importance on professional development and believes that it is a crucial skill for success in a future career.

Dr. Hester's plan for Jarvis Christian University is to implement professional development in the academic curriculum for all students. She aspires to prepare the students for the post-graduate transition by adding those soft skills to their everyday life. She sees the future of Jarvis developing in technology and more accessible student resources. By incorporating more business and etiquette courses, students will be able to confidently transition into their future aspirations. Dr. Cynthia Hester has made her mark at Jarvis Christian University and will continue to be one of our most influential staff members.

Dr. Herman Howard Dean of Humanities & Arts:  A Calling to Higher Education and HBCU Pride


Dr. Herman Howard is a distinguished figure in the realm of higher education, holding a Bachelor's degree from Indiana State University, a Master's degree from Central Michigan University, and a Doctorate from Regent University. His journey in academia has been marked by a profound sense of purpose, attributing his decision to work in higher education to a calling from the Lord. Driven by a desire to help others and guided by his faith, he has become a beacon of inspiration for students and colleagues alike.

 

A Calling from the Lord:
For Dr. Howard, the decision to work in higher education was not merely a career choice but a divine calling. He believes that his role in academia is a means to serve and assist others, contributing to the personal and educational growth of students. This sense of purpose has shaped his approach to leadership and fostered connections with key people and leaders from across the country.

 

Changes in Campus Culture:
Reflecting on his undergraduate years, Dr. Howard notes a shift in campus culture over the years. He observes that students in the past were more "connected" with each other, fostering a sense of community. In the era of social media, many students now prefer to stay in their rooms or off-campus. Despite these changes, Dr. Howard emphasizes the importance of preserving traditions that contribute to the rich legacy of higher education and HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) pride.

 

Impactful Contributions to the University:
Dr. Howard sees his most impactful contribution to the university in the relationships he has built and the assistance he has provided to others. Connecting with students, faculty, and staff has been a cornerstone of his leadership, creating an environment that nurtures growth and collaboration.

 

The Ruth B. Johnson Building:
When asked about having a campus building named after him, Dr. Howard selflessly suggests naming it after his late mother, calling it The Ruth B. Johnson Building. He envisions this building as a hub for activities and programs that support student development, education, and community engagement.

 

Favorite Campus Event: Graduation Day!
Dr. Howard eagerly looks forward to Graduation Day each year. Witnessing students achieve their academic milestones and embark on new journeys is a source of immense joy and fulfillment for him.

 

Staff Talent Show:
Although uncertain about his talent for a staff talent show, Dr. Howard humorously ponders the idea. His willingness to participate reflects a lighthearted and approachable side, endearing him to the university community.

 

Heartwarming Student Interaction:
Dr. Howard recalls a heartwarming student interaction, a moment that left a lasting impression on him. Though specific details may be elusive, the significance lies in the countless meaningful connections he has forged with students over the years.

Future Vision for Jarvis Christian University:
Looking ahead, Dr. Howard envisions growth in student enrollment and increased opportunities for internships. He is committed to steering Jarvis Christian University toward a future marked by expansion, excellence, and enriched educational experiences for all.


Dr. Herman Howard's journey in higher education is a testament to his unwavering commitment to service, guided by his faith and a calling from the Lord. His leadership, connections, and vision for the future continue to shape the trajectory of Jarvis Christian University, leaving an indelible mark on the institution and the lives of those he serves.

 

Contribution: Dr. Adrienne Moore-MASS COMMUNICATIONS 

Chair of Humanities and Special Assitant to the VP for Academic Affairs Dr. Trenton Judson, the Chair of Humanities and Special Assistant to the VP for Academic Affairs, has made a significant impact on the campus of Jarvis Christian University. Before joining Jarvis, Dr. Judson earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Literature from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. Following his completion of these degrees, he received his Ph.D. in English from Texas A&M Commerce.

 

What inspires Judson to lead an HBCU campus is his students. Every day he works with the students at Jarvis is a successful day. His favorite part about teaching at Jarvis is seeing students engaged in the learning process along with simply being there for his students. Dr. Judson is a published author and creative writing coach who also has a passion for yoga. He teaches a yoga and creative writing course as well as a film course at Jarvis.

 

Dr. Judson cherishes his beautiful wife and two kids while striving to be his best self. He sees Jarvis Christian University as a growing institution with many bright plans ahead. He hopes for the growth of the literature and mass communication programs along with the humanities department.

 

Judson's primary focus is to secure internships for students who are interested in fine arts while also providing them with travel opportunities. He aims to help his students achieve their dreams of exploring the world and expanding their knowledge. Currently, he is working towards fundraising efforts for a special program in Greece designed for students at Jarvis Christian University. The institution is very proud of his contributions and considers him a valuable member of the team, dedicating his time and effort to the betterment of the students.

Dr. Saliba Mukoro, the Dean of Graduate School

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down and speaking with Dr. Saliba Mukoro, the Dean of Graduate School at Jarvis Christian University. With warmth and candor, Dr. Mukoro shared his journey in academia and his optimistic vision for the university's future, making our conversation both enlightening and engaging.

Dr. Mukoro's academic journey began at Sam Houston University, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Criminology and Corrections, followed by a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice. When asked about his decision to work in higher education, Dr. Mukoro emphasized his desire to leverage his doctoral degree to benefit students, underscoring his commitment to teaching and mentorship.

Dr. Mukoro's career in education has been exclusively dedicated to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), a choice he attributes to his genuine enjoyment of the experience. Apart from his tenure at Jarvis Christian University, he spent three impactful years at Grambling State University and 18 years at Mississippi Valley State University. In his career, he served as the Coordinator of the Criminal Justice program before assuming the role of Department Chair for both Criminal Justice and Social Work. Following a departmental split, he continued as the Department Chair for Criminal Justice, also overseeing the Criminal Justice Graduate Program. This extensive experience underscores his deep-seated passion for the distinctive educational environment provided by HBCUs.

Dr. Mukoro stressed the importance of hard work and dedication, echoing the sentiments of HBCU pride. He emphasized the need for students to take their studies seriously, underscoring the traditions essential for fostering academic excellence and cultural identity within HBCUs.

When asked about his most impactful contribution to Jarvis Christian University, Dr. Mukoro emphasized his dedication to enhancing instructional quality for both undergraduate and graduate students. He described himself as firm yet student-friendly, prioritizing high standards while ensuring an engaging learning experience.

 

Dr. Mukoro humbly shared his vision for a potential campus building named after him. He proposed the idea of establishing a Graduate School Complex that focuses on fostering graduate education and facilitating various programs to support student advancement. As the current Dean of Graduate School, he envisions this building as a hub for various graduate programs for students, centralizing their activities and furthering academic excellence.

Despite his many responsibilities, Dr. Mukoro remains deeply connected to campus life, eagerly anticipating the annual Graduation Ceremony and Gala Night. These events hold a special place in his heart, as he cherishes the celebration and reflection they offer, complete with great music and a refreshing atmosphere. Moreover, he humorously alluded to his skill on the dance floor, emphasizing his active participation in campus life and his knack for bringing vibrancy to university events.

Recalling a memorable encounter with a student who bore a striking resemblance to Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Mukoro shared a heartwarming anecdote that left a lasting impression on him. This encounter underscored his belief in nurturing future leaders and celebrating the diversity of the student body.

Looking ahead, Dr. Mukoro holds a vision for Jarvis Christian University to evolve into a leading institution, offering doctoral programs and gaining prominence in the academic sphere. He expressed confidence in the realization of this vision, attributing it to the university's goal-oriented and effective President, coupled with the dedication of the university's team. Dr. Mukoro is optimistic about the university's journey towards academic excellence and broader recognition, underscoring his commitment to contributing to this collective aspiration.

In conclusion, interviewing Dr. Mukoro was a delightful experience filled with laughter and engaging discussions about his illustrious career path. His warmth and enthusiasm were evident throughout our conversation. Dr. Mukoro's dedication to academic excellence, mentorship, and active involvement in campus life truly epitomizes the ethos of Jarvis Christian University. His forward-looking vision for the university reflects a genuine passion for fostering excellence and creating a nurturing learning environment for future generations.

MELODY THREADCRAFT, Ph.D.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & SOCIAL SCIENCE CHAIR

Dr. Melody Threadcraft: Nurturing Future Leaders at Jarvis Christian University

Dr. Melody Threadcraft, a distinguished educator with degrees from the University of Houston, Prairie View A & M, and Texas Southern University, has devoted her career to higher education. Her journey into this realm was fueled by a desire to work with aspiring practitioners and share the wealth of resources she amassed throughout her academic career.

Primarily motivated by a passion for leadership, Dr. Threadcraft finds inspiration in the immediate opportunities to shape young minds destined for roles in teaching, research, leadership, and the criminal justice field. As a black scholar, she recognizes the responsibility to teach within the academic academy, modeling opportunities and outcomes for the upcoming generation of scholars and practitioners.

 

Reflecting on her undergraduate experience, Dr. Threadcraft highlights the transformative changes on today's campuses. The advent of digitalized technology, the emphasis on self-advocacy among students, and the availability of local amenities are notable shifts that have shaped the current university landscape.

Threadcraft emphasizes the unique enriching traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), where students can gather to celebrate their culture, share life experiences, and develop leadership skills. These institutions, she asserts, provide a sense of safety and familial belonging, nurturing a well-preserved culture that prepares students for success in their careers.

 

Dr. Threadcraft identifies her willingness to serve the university and her research contributions as her most impactful endeavors. Her research has not only enriched the network of scholars but also created a supportive environment for students progressing in their education.

If a campus building were to be named in her honor, Dr. Threadcraft envisions a space offering immediate resources during life challenges. This center would provide wrap-around services, including housing assistance, financial guidance, family counseling, therapy, and educational support.

 

The grand "Graduation Trek" holds special significance for Dr. Threadcraft. This powerful event symbolizes the journey of graduating seniors from potential graduates to proud alumni, with the support of the university community.

When asked about her interests outside academia, Dr. Threadcraft humorously notes a shift from line dancing to mastering the art of working with props and setting up stages, showcasing her diverse skill set.

 

Sharing heartwarming stories from her career, Dr. Threadcraft finds immense joy in witnessing Criminal Justice students succeed in job applications and graduate school admissions. The sheer happiness of students securing positions warms her to the core.

Looking ahead, Dr. Threadcraft expresses her hopes for Jarvis Christian University to maintain its status as a premier learning space. She envisions the university continually strengthening its platform for skill-building, nurturing diverse areas of study, and fostering the growth of students into successful entrepreneurs, researchers, educators, practitioners, and leaders.

Dr. Melody Threadcraft remains dedicated to contributing to the strategic planning team that will propel Jarvis Christian University towards its future goals. Her commitment to education, leadership, and student success serves as a beacon for the university community.
